In 2008, Waitakere Properties Limited engaged MSC Consulting Group to provide civil and structural engineering services for the planning and design of the development of the Hobsonville Marine Industry Precinct (MIP).
The Marine Industry Precinct is located on part of the decommissioned airbase on Hobsonville Peninsula in west Auckland.
When completely developed, the MIP will occupy 20ha and provide world class facilities for the New Zealand superyacht building industry. Facilities include 9ha of buildings for boat building and mixed marine use, launching facilities for boats up to 1000 tonne capacity and associated road, stormwater, wastewater, utilities and public transport facilities.
The MIP is only one part of the development of Hobsonville Peninsula and an important aspect of the project was coordinating the development with The Landing ferry terminal, and Hobsonville Land Company’s Buckley Avenue and Sunderland precinct developments.
Of particular relevance to the MIP project is the fact that MSC staff are part of a large multi-disciplinary team including planners, architects, urban designers, traffic engineers and geotechnical engineers. The success of the project to date has been the teams’ abilities to liaise and coordinate with each other and with the project stakeholders (Waitakere Properties Limited, Auckland Regional Council and Waitakere City Council (Auckland Council post-amalgamation), iwi, and Hobsonville Land Company).
Stage One of the development started in 2011.
