As an integral part of the 20 hectare Hub retail development in Whakatane, MSC Consulting Group was engaged to provide design and construction supervision services for the upgrade of State Highway 30.
The work on State Highway 30 in Whakatane, which runs along the north side of the Hub development, was part of a larger contract for MSC that included site development works for the $27 million, 20 hectare large-format retail development.
The SH30 upgrade works included two new two-lane roundabouts and dual-laning of 420m of the existing single two-way state highway plus the tie-ins at each end of the upgrading works to the existing carriageway.
A new signing scheme, street lighting, service relocations and intersection and access upgrades were also included in the scope of works.
Design work for the road’s horizontal and vertical geometry was undertaken using Civil 3D modelling software. Careful consideration of the vertical and horizontal alignment was required to minimise the amount of regrading work undertaken to the existing carriageway.
The design was subject to both pre-construction and post-construction safety audits and a peer review by Transit New Zealand’s consultant.
Works were completed in 2007, and MSC was retained to provide engineering design for further stages of the development.
